As some of you may know, Sandy has been involved with Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Gallery (SAM) as a Resident Artist since the start of the year. Recently offered an Associate position with LampLight Studio, a new ceramic and glass open studio which focuses more on her media area and gives her the opportunity to have a workspace in ceramics, teach clay classes, show in the gallery, help LampLight marketing and assist with daily operation of the facility. With this opportunity, she is leaving SAM to join the LampLight Studio family.
Sandy is thrilled to be apart of LampLight Studio. She met owner, Rob Miller in 2005 and began talking about ceramics and through the years they sporadically kept in touch with their mutual interest in clay. A year ago he told Sandy he purchased an old firehouse in Overland, Missouri. Over the last nine months she watched the facility transform from the 1952-built fire station into a wonderful art facility. Impressively, Rob did much of the construction work himself, moving bathrooms, eliminating the fire station showers, adding a kitchenette area, gallery space, and sectioning off various rooms for studio areas. When needed, he used subcontractors to do some of the few things he couldn’t. The space is now fitted with top of the line equipment carefully selected by Rob.
The main bay of the fire station for clay artists hosts:
• 10-Brent pottery wheels
• tables for hand-building
• a Northstar slab roller
• a Super Duper Extruder
The side rooms:
• have a dedicated glaze room with an impressive spray booth;
• a Glass classroom with a 4.5 cu. ft. Skutt kiln with Glass Master Controller & viewing window
• a gallery space for exhibitions and meeting;
• and office space for the organization.
The indoor kiln area contains:
• an 18 cu. ft. Geil gas kiln (computerized firing and damper control)
• an L & L frontloading electric kiln
• a Peter Pugger pug mill/mixer
The fenced outdoor kiln area will (soon) have:
• a small Soda kiln
• a Laguna Raku kiln
LampLight Studio is a MEMBERSHIP-BASED facility with a mission to encourage a sense of community among its members by bringing artisans and fine craft enthusiasts together in a common workspace. With artists working together, LampLight Studio wants to provide the opportunity to share the ideas and techniques to help it’s members grow as artists. While LampLight Studio’s website is still in its early stages, you can see some facility images and get a feel for the organization. Please check back as information will be added along with the date of our debut grand opening and future classes and events. Initially, Sandy’s work will be on display at LampLight Studio in the gallery area until we begin our regular exhibition schedule. For artists, please continue to check back on the website for future “Call to Artists”.
LampLight is having an Open House on June 5th, 2010 from 12:00 - 4:00pm. If you miss the opportunity to see the space, feel free to drop by the studio and tour the facility during regular hours.
